“Fear The Night No Longer”
April 25th, 2018 – Approximately 50 women and the 12 families of the murder victims got the resolution they had waited four decades to see. The East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer has been identified. When I first started writing this I had another list of theories as to whom the offender was and where we might find him. But to my relief, they are all irrelevant now.
So now I am writing my thoughts on the end of this case. Selfishly, I’m almost sad to see it end. I’ve always loved a good mystery and this has captivated my interest since I was 18 years old. Now I’m 29 and excited to see what it is going to happen in the coming weeks and months. Maybe many of our questions over the years will finally be answered.
Hopefully for the first time in over forty years the victims can no longer have any fear of the night. They can know without hesitation that Joseph James DeAngelo will not be climbing through their windows tonight. You are safe from harm. Now all your questions have the potential answers that you have sought over all this time.
Personally, I want to know how he selected each victim. I have often wondered if they trace back to the Visalia Ransacker’s attack on Beth Snelling. An attack in which that her father, Claude Snelling, lost his life in trying to protect his daughter from this evil and deranged man. Could she have been the focus of his rage all these years?
There are so many questions about this case that remain unanswered. Perhaps we will see them answered in the coming weeks and months. However their remains one debate in my mind that I cannot escape. If there were ever a case that deserved the death penalty in my mind, this is it.
Still there remains a lingering issue on my mind. Many serial offenders never agree to cooperate until they have no control left over whatever sick game they are playing in their twisted minds. A willingness to waive the death penalty in exchange for a full confession of his entire story that can shed light on 50 rapes and 12 homicides may be too strong of an opportunity to simply let slide.
Do we say no and send him to death row where you won’t get an argument from me to the contrary? Perhaps. However there may still be cases out there that we still don’t know about and the explanation as to how he was so successful in evading capture all this time may prove as valuable experience to law enforcement to help arrest future offenders. I’m not saying that we should dismiss the death penalty, but at 72 years of age, he may not live long enough to see such a sentence carried out.
If we can get this smug, arrogant psychopath to confess by offering him an alternative that can yield our society a variety of benefits, I would offer that it is at least worth consideration. I also watched his arraignment this afternoon and if you look at how old and frail he looks, putting him on death row isn’t going to yield the results one would want.
By the time the State would get around to executing him, he would have likely met his maker through some health related cause. While I agree if there was ever a case that could warrant the death penalty, I won’t try and convince those who feel strongly towards it to dispel such a notion. But I feel there is much to be learned from him if he cooperates and if that is what it takes to accomplish this goal it may just be worthwhile.
The precedents that could be developed from this case could change the face of criminal investigations into serial offenders going forward could pay bigger dividends than executing this suspect ever could. After fifty known attacks as “The East Area Rapist” and twelve known murders as “The Original Night Stalker”, his ability to avoid detection until the luck of a Genealogy website provided the connection needed to finally put this matter to rest.
Insights into his mindset could also help apprehend other sexual predators such as the serial rapist that has struck in Utah and Wyoming in recent years. Like Ted Bundy giving insight into the mindset of the Green River Killer, insight that turned out to be accurate when Gary Ridgeway was finally arrested years later.
Whether DeAngelo is of the same make as a Ted Bundy in that the nature of their predatory psychopathy, remains to be seen. Maybe after years in jail or upon Death Row, he will decide to cooperate with those who dedicated their lives to hunting him down and bringing him to face long overdue justice.
Overdue in that his rape victims have long passed their statute of limitations. Still DNA will never let them be forgotten and now in all irony, a man who was apparently insecure about having a small penis will have it on display for the whole world to see courtesy of the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office.
The Sacramento Bee reported recently that not only must the suspect provide DNA Samples to investigators, but also photography of his genitals to help the prosecutions case. You can call me insensitive all you want and I cant disagree with that but I will always enjoy the irony that a man so insecure about the size of his penis chose to become a rapist and as a result, the whole world now knows that Joseph James DeAngelo has a small penis.
As a result, the 50 rape victims and those affected by these attacks plus the families of the 12 murder victims can find solace in his humiliation in that they need Fear The Night No Longer.
